Lotus releases spreadsheet software Lotus 1-2-3

Lotus 1-2-3 was a spreadsheet program developed by Mitch Kapor and Jonathan Sachs for the IBM PC. It was hugely successful, often called the IBM PC's first "killer application", and contributed significantly to the success of the IBM PC in the corporate environment.

In the UK, Lotus 1-2-3 was the first computer software to be advertised on TV.

The success of Lotus 1-2-3 can be attributed to a number of factors:

  • Functionality closely followed the existing, familiar model of VisiCalc.
  • Operation was free of serious bugs.
  • Performance was very fast because it used x86 assembly language.
